Sustainable Finance Analyst – UNDP Zimbabwe

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Zimbabwe is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated professional to fill the position of Sustainable Finance Analyst, based in Harare. This full-time role presents a unique opportunity to lead Zimbabwe’s efforts in designing and implementing Biodiversity Finance Plans (BFPs), contributing to national sustainable development priorities and global biodiversity goals.

Driving Sustainability through Finance

As part of UNDP’s Nature, Climate and Energy Practice Area, the Sustainable Finance Analyst will be a core team member of the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) under the GEF-8 umbrella. The project supports the Government of Zimbabwe in mobilizing and aligning public and private financial flows to meet biodiversity targets outlined in the Montreal-Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework, with a special focus on Target 19 on resource mobilization.

The role is instrumental in bridging Zimbabwe’s biodiversity finance gap by strengthening systems, reducing environmentally harmful subsidies, and developing innovative finance mechanisms that support nature-based solutions and resilience-building.

Core Responsibilities

The Sustainable Finance Analyst will:

  • Lead and manage day-to-day project operations, supervising national consultants and technical teams.

  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement across government, private sector, civil society, and academia.

  • Provide technical expertise on biodiversity finance, policy alignment, and subsidy reforms.

  • Guide the production of key outputs including the Policy and Institutional Review (PIR), Biodiversity Expenditure Review (BER), Financial Needs Assessment (FNA), and the final Biodiversity Finance Plan (BFP).

  • Ensure compliance with UNDP and GEF reporting, monitoring and evaluation standards.

  • Spearhead communication strategies to disseminate results, engage partners, and promote best practices in biodiversity finance.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants must hold:

  • A Master’s degree in Environmental Finance, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Economics, or related fields with at least 2 years of relevant experience; OR

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 4 years of qualifying experience.

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing or implementing environmental or biodiversity-related projects.

  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage consultants, and coordinate multi-stakeholder processes.

  • Familiarity with policy instruments, financial tools, and biodiversity finance mechanisms.

  • Excellent communication skills in English and either Shona or Ndebele.

Prior experience with UNDP or in international development settings, as well as knowledge of Zimbabwe’s environmental policy landscape, will be a significant advantage.

Competencies and Skills

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Strong results orientation and analytical thinking.

  • Ability to manage systems and projects with attention to financial, institutional, and political dimensions.

  • Experience in resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Technical knowledge of biodiversity economics, subsidy analysis, and sustainable financing frameworks.

Institutional Support and Collaboration

The successful candidate will head the National Project Management Unit (NPMU) and work under the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, reporting to the Project Director and working closely with the Global Project Management and Technical Support Unit (GPMTSU). This position is critical in ensuring Zimbabwe’s successful contribution to global biodiversity conservation and sustainable development efforts.
