From Reject To Goal Machine: Zimbabwe’s Hottest Striker Washington Navaya Wanted By Six SA Clubs

The Zimbabwean striker who has six SA Premiership clubs salivating for his signature

Washington Navaya is scoring for fun—and South Africa is watching. The TelOne FC striker has taken Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League by storm, netting eight goals in just eleven matches. Now, at least six SA Betway Premiership clubs are reportedly chasing after him and salivating for his signature.

“Several clubs in the Betway Premiership have made inquiries,” his agent Gilbert Sengwe told FARPost.

“It’s too early to divulge the clubs now since we are still weighing options. Also, if anything tangible, we have to update and communicate with his current club since he still has a running contract.”

The big comeback

Navaya’s resurgence has taken many by surprise.

Offloaded by Highlanders at the end of 2023, the 26-year-old striker returned to his roots in Gweru. TelOne FC, the team he once played for in 2019, welcomed him back for the 2024 season—and he hasn’t looked back.

“Playing at home and scoring in front of my family and friends gives me the joy that I have not felt in a long time,” Navaya told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

“Everything has been going on well here in Gweru. I am coping well and everyone has been accommodative.”

The former ZPC Munyati and Highlanders forward has been in electric form, winning back-to-back Player of the Month awards in March and April. He’s also tipped to scoop the May prize.

TelOne FC currently sit fifth on the log with 17 points—six behind league leaders MWOS. While the team remains modest in their title ambitions, their talisman is catching fire.

“He is part of the team and he is just doing his job,” said TelOne coach Herbert Maruwa.

“But I am very happy he is working extra hard to get the goals. I challenged him to reach double figures and I think that’s pushing him to go an extra mile.”

AFCON and beyond

With eyes now turning towards the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Navaya is not just a domestic star—he’s a potential national hero.

His goal tally and form have made him impossible to ignore.

“Reaching double figures will be a good achievement,” Navaya said.

“It will also help the team in the long run. It’s a long journey and I have to take it step by step.”

Although Sengwe hasn’t named the six South African clubs, FARPost has indicated that Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United are on the list.

Navaya’s current contract runs until the end of the 2025 season, but with this kind of interest, it may be difficult for TelOne to keep their star man.
