Umlazi Massacre: 8 Shot Dead in Durban Informal Settlement

A night of social drinking ended in horror after eight people were gunned down in Umlazi U, south of Durban. The victims — six men and two women — were reportedly gathered at an informal settlement when they were shot dead.

According to senior eNCA reporter Dasen Thathiah, who posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, 16 May, early indications suggest the motive wasn’t robbery. For now, the reason behind the brutal killings remains unclear.

The tragic incident left many South Africans heartbroken and angry. Some expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives, while others called on the government to treat crime in KwaZulu-Natal as a national emergency. There was also strong support for the police, especially KZN SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, with many believing he would act swiftly to bring the killers to justice. Others criticised the justice system for protecting criminals and questioned the country’s ability to control the spread of illegal firearms.

Here are some of the reactions:

@SMukwakungu:

“This is quite sad 😢 8 lives taken by criminals. The crime situation in SA, particularly in KZN should be declared state priority. Resources should be allocated and laws amended to decisively deal with crime in SA. MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE 😢 Thank you for reporting 🙏🏾

@TheDudestest:

Knowing the law of this country.. they will protect the shooters at all costs, making sure they stay alive and must be “questioned” as if that will bring the victims back to life..🙄

@TrevorMoyz:

They are going to meet their maker within 7 working days.

@Mogenerale24:

People who always question KZN SAPS for killing criminals should give us their solutions in such situations.

@ntovholeni1:

Mass killings are happening regularly in this country it has become normal. so many illegal guns are in the hands of criminals. and as long as the state is unable to find out where criminals are getting these firearms from, people will continue being killed.
