Married Couple Killed In High-Speed Crash In Bulawayo
A married couple from Entumbane was tragically killed in a high-speed car crash in Bulawayo on Saturday evening.
According to Bulawayo Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the crash occurred around 8pm along Nketa Drive when the driver, Bekithemba Tshuma (35), allegedly lost control of a white Toyota Corolla and crashed into a tree. His wife, Tsvangirai Lorraine (25), was also in the car. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
“The vehicle was reportedly speeding when the driver lost control and rammed into a tree,” said Assistant Inspector Msebele. “We suspect excessive speed played a role, and investigations are still ongoing.”
Social media floods with shock and grief
The couple’s sudden death has left the Entumbane community and wider Zimbabwe reeling. Hundreds took to Facebook and X to express their grief and raise questions about road safety.
“Such a painful exit from this land of the living,” wrote Janet Maphosa Watson.
“May God protect us all and not leave in such a manner. May their souls rest in peace.”
Another Facebook user, Kwanele Mthunzi, speculated:
“Condolences to the family, probably it hit a pothole. Speed is not a problem when the road is perfect.”
A visibly shocked Mehluli Matt Mpofu commented:
“OMG… speed played a part here, imota inje so. Kubuhlungu lokhu.”
Calls for responsibility and debate on small cars
Many posts showed raw grief, but some commenters used the tragedy to highlight dangerous driving behaviours and the fragility of smaller imported cars on Zimbabwean roads.
“Speed kills. You can tell the car was speeding,” said Kuphe Ed on Facebook.
“The accident happened in a residential area—why was the car going so fast where children and pedestrians are at risk?”
On X, @ChiranduWasim echoed the same concerns:
“This & the accident on Borrowdale Road in Harare involving a Honda Fit should ignite a debate about the need to take care—especially given the poor structural integrity of most small imported cars.”
Another user, @PabloGa24354, asked:
“Why are people overspeeding on pothole-infested roads?”
Police continue with investigations
The bodies of the deceased were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for post-mortem examinations. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially on roads with poor visibility or infrastructure.
“We remind all motorists to adhere to speed limits and drive responsibly,” said Assistant Inspector Msebele.
As the Entumbane community mourns, tributes continue to pour in.
“Rest in peace my guy,” wrote Dudu Ms-Dee Phakathi.
“Life is way too short & our end unpredictable,” added Shareen Sibanda.
