Karate Legend Sensei Mugo’s Death Leaves Friend Hospitalised With Stroke
A close friend of Zimbabwean karate legend, Sensei Mugove “Mugo” Muhambi, suffered a stroke after learning of the martial artist’s tragic death in a road accident.
In a deeply personal update posted on X on 18 May 2025, former Norton legislator and wellness advocate Temba P. Mliswa confirmed the news.
“It never rains but pours. This is Naison Masaka, a friend of the late Mugo,” wrote Mliswa.
“Sadly he had a stroke after hearing about Mugo’s death. I went to school with him and also work with him in my wellness programs. It’s another painful experience. He was taken to hospital yesterday.”
Stroke after tragedy
The emotional impact of Sensei Mugo’s sudden passing appears to have triggered a medical emergency for Masaka, who is now receiving care at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
“He is admitted at Parirenyatwa. I urge all who know him to support him,” Mliswa posted in a follow-up.
“This is his wife’s number (077 8946140) – you can also send Ecocash for support.”
Mliswa also added:
“This is another testament to the kind of person Mugo was. However, the devil is a liar. We shall emerge stronger from this.”
The tragic events unfolded after Sensei Mugo died in a car crash along Borrowdale Road on Saturday morning, 17 May. According to The Herald, he was driving a Honda Fit near St George’s College when the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota GD6. He died on the spot.
National mourning continues
Tributes have poured in for Mugo, who was Vice President of the Zimbabwe Karate Union and a respected fourth Dan black belt in Kyokushin Karate.
Fellow athletes, politicians, and fans have expressed their shock and sorrow online.
“Heartbroken
Sensei Mugo. Such a fine brother & great teacher,” posted @tapera_david.
“His impact on the community & countless lives will never be forgotten.”
Others echoed the sentiment.
“Mhdsriep! He was a good man indeed,” said @JokiReZanuPf.
“Rest in peace, Sensei Mugo.”
More than a martial artist
Born into a large family of athletes, Mugo trained under Shihan Misheck Chiwayo and later under Shihan Tendayi Marange. He was also an actor, famously portraying “Zola” in a ZBC drama.
In addition to his martial arts accolades, he was a known fitness trainer and mental wellness advocate.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the accident. Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged drivers to be vigilant, particularly in the early hours.
“It is a true sense of driving carefully that is required,” he said, adding that caution on the roads could help prevent further tragedies.
As the nation mourns the passing of Sensei Mugo, attention is now also focused on the recovery of Naison Masaka, a man said to be devastated by the loss of his dear friend.
