Wicknell Chivayo Explains Why He Won’t Donate to Public Hospitals
Flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo has once again defended his decision to buy cars for church members and influencers instead of using his money to improve public hospitals or buy medication.
This isn’t the first time Chivayo has addressed the criticism. He previously touched on the subject during an interview with Capitalk FM hosts Phathisani and Tinashe Chikuse.
“Why Publicise Giveaways While Hospitals Suffer?”
On Saturday, 17 May, an X user going by @HChikaty reignited the debate. They asked why Chivayo publicises his car giveaways if he truly does them out of love. They also challenged him on the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public health sector, saying there isn’t even basic medication in many government hospitals.
“My question to you… If you’re giving those people your giving cars out of love why do you have to go online? Zvipatara hazvina kana pain killer Mr sir mukuzvizivawo here?” @HChikaty asked Chivayo.
Chivayo responded bluntly. He said he doesn’t work for the Ministry of Health and has no obligation to refurbish hospitals or supply medication. In his words, how he spends his money is entirely his business.

He added that not all his acts of giving are posted online, and many beneficiaries, especially church members, receive their gifts privately. Then came his sharpest jab: he told the critic to use their own money if they’re so concerned.
“Handisi Minister of Health anoona nezve zipatara munyika uye handishqmdire Ministry iyoyo. Mota ndinotengera wandada nenguva yandinoda uye vamwe ndino nyora vakawanda veku church handi nyore saka ndinzwisise Chikomana ini ndinoita zvandinoda ne mari yangu. Zimbabweans Split Over Chivayo’s Remarks
His remarks sparked a wave of mixed reactions. Some social media users supported him, saying it’s unfair to expect one man to solve national health problems. Others reminded him that no matter how rich he is today, he could one day rely on the same struggling health system he’s brushing off now.
Here are some of the comments:
@LazarusMpo:
Some people don’t deserve the big man’s attention. Dai musina kumupindura munhu uyu coz. After all, you’re not the only person worth millions in Zimbabwe, and varikuitawo zvavanoda nayo facts are not lies
@ndlovinikayise7:
The British and Americans spoiled us a lot by over donating, now everyone feels like the rich should just give to the poor,l doubt that’s a proper mentality as a learned society, VUKUZENZELE.
