Foreigners Jailed for Scamming South African Woman Out of R650,000

Two foreigners, Serage Martin Lubenga (28) and Rhoda Mirembe (33), have each been sentenced to 20 years in prison after swindling a 39-year-old South African woman out of R650,000 in a fake spiritual scam.

The elaborate scheme began when the victim met a man who introduced himself as “Martin.” Over time, they formed a close bond, and she opened up to him about her personal and financial struggles.

Martin claimed he knew a powerful prophet who could help her turn her finances around. He then introduced her to a woman named “Alice,” who was later revealed to be his accomplice, Rhoda Mirembe.

What followed were a series of staged prayer sessions. In one instance, “Alice” arrived at the victim’s home in a BMW and produced a bag she claimed held counterfeit cash amounting to R4 million. She told the woman that to access the R4 million, she would first need to contribute 10% of it upfront — R400,000.

Clinging to hope, the victim eventually scraped together R650,000 and handed it over. The scammers even requested copies of her ID, bank statements, and salary slip, pretending they would pray over the documents to help her secure a job promotion and financial breakthrough.

The deception continued until the victim began to suspect foul play and investigated further, eventually uncovering the scam. Lubenga and Mirembe were arrested shortly after and have now been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the fraudulent scheme.
