A voice that defined an era
Madhimba was known for his calm authority and professionalism on screen. According to the NewsHawks, Madhimba joined the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) shortly after the country’s independence in 1980. He had just returned from France, where he studied journalism and worked with Agence France-Presse (AFP).
At ZBC, Madhimba started as a sub-editor before becoming a lead news reader under the guidance of the late Claude Mararike.
“He was part of a golden generation of ZBC journalists,” a former colleague said.
“He worked alongside Grey Tichatonga, John Gambanga, Busi Chindove, Robin Shava, and many others.”
A life beyond broadcasting
After leaving ZBC, Madhimba relocated to Namibia. There, he became a lecturer at the Polytechnic of Namibia and later ventured into the financial sector. Those close to him say he remained passionate about media and education.
In early 2024, Madhimba suffered a stroke, which led to heart complications. He was hospitalised for almost a year before passing away in Okahandja, about 60km north of Windhoek.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
Tributes pour in
Social media was flooded with tributes from journalists, students, and media professionals across Southern Africa. Many remembered his voice, poise, and integrity.
“Joseph Madhimba was one of Zimbabwe’s greatest news readers of all time,” a user wrote on X.
“A true professional in a very challenging media environment.”
“His passing marks the end of an era,” another posted.
“We will never forget that voice.”
