Chris Mutsvangwa Warns Kuda Tagwirei Over His Presidential Ambitions

Businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who is rumoured to be positioning himself for Zimbabwe’s presidency, has hit a political roadblock. Chris Mutsvangwa, Zanu PF’s outspoken spokesman and a presidential hopeful himself, has publicly cautioned Tagwirei to temper his ambitions.

Reports suggest that some senior Zanu PF leaders are trying to fast-track Tagwirei into the party’s powerful central committee and politburo. There are even whispers that President Emmerson Mnangagwa supports Tagwirei as a possible successor. But Mutsvangwa made it clear that taking the party’s top job won’t be a simple ride for the businessman.

At a recent news conference, Mutsvangwa stressed that while anyone can join Zanu PF — whether a businessman, farmer, or fisherman — ambition alone won’t guarantee political success. He reminded that joining the party should be about following its rules and respecting its democratic processes, not about chasing positions.

Mutsvangwa said that if someone joins Zanu PF with the sole goal of grabbing power, people will see through that quickly, and it will backfire. He added that Zanu PF is a broad-based party, not an exclusive elite club, and it expects members to serve the party’s interests rather than personal gain.

“What would be wrong is to say I’m getting into the party so that I become this or that post, that I become the president, because that is not the purpose of joining the party. The purpose of joining the party is to follow the constitution of the party and see to it that when succession is done by votes, you comply with the tenets of that party. It’s a mass party, it’s not a vanguard party, it allows everybody to come into the party. But if you come on a ticket that I want power, the people may see through what you want, and that becomes a challenge,” he said.

Serving the Party, Not Self

Mutsvangwa emphasised that those who enter the party must do so to contribute, not to seek self-promotion. He pointed out that Zanu PF has a history of removing leaders who stray from its principles and warned that anyone with “hidden ambitions” will eventually be pushed out.

“Hopefully, all the businessmen entrants who come through will come to serve the party and not to serve themselves because serving themselves will not take them anywhere in Zanu PF, I can vouch for that. Just like presidents who went haywire and we removed them, Zanu PF will winnow out any people with hidden ambitions other than following the strictures of Zanu PF,” Mutsvangwa added.
