According to police, a takedown operation was launched after they received intelligence that one of the wanted suspects was hiding out at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.
When officers moved in and announced their presence, the suspect allegedly opened fire. Police returned fire, fatally wounding the man, said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the suspect’s identity, but it is believed to be the same man Mongale met for a date on the day she was murdered.

More Suspects Still at Large
The investigation is still ongoing. Police are hunting for Bongani Mthimkhulu, Philangenkosi Makhanya, and Fezile Ngubane — all wanted in connection with the murder of 30-year-old Mongale, whose body was found dumped near Cambridge Road in Lombardy West, Johannesburg, on Sunday.
While two suspects remain on the run, police have taken the parents of one of the wanted men in for questioning.
The suspect’s mother is accused of tipping off her son after learning that police were closing in, helping him escape an attempted arrest on Wednesday.
It’s also believed that the suspect’s father owns the vehicle that was allegedly used in Mongale’s murder.
The police have urged anyone with information to come forward as the search for the remaining suspects intensifies.
