Postbank Issues Urgent Warning To SASSA Grant Recipients
South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant beneficiaries have been warned about a surge in scams targeting their Postbank black and SASSA gold cards. Fraudsters are posing as Postbank officials, tricking victims into handing over their cards and PINs.
Postbank issued an urgent alert on Friday, May 30, 2025, urging beneficiaries to stay vigilant.
How the scam works
Fraudsters visit homes unannounced, pretending to be Postbank employees. They claim there’s an issue with the card or threaten that grants will stop if they don’t comply.
“The beneficiaries are then duped into handing over their Postbank grant cards and PIN information under the pretext that there is something that requires fixing on the cards; or fear is instilled in them that they will not receive their future grant payments if they don’t hand over their cards and PIN information.”
Postbank confirmed that no changes are needed for black or gold SASSA cards, and both will continue working after May 31, 2025.
How to spot a scammer
Postbank shared key red flags:
-
They arrive without an appointment.
-
They ask for your PIN (a major banking violation).
-
They pressure you into handing over your card.
If approached, beneficiaries should:
“Quietly alert your neighbours and the community. Alert the police. Report the incident to Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.”
Protect your PIN at all costs
Postbank stressed that no legitimate official will ever ask for a PIN.
“Memorise your PIN and don’t write it on a piece of paper. If you must write it, ensure it’s not kept with your card.”
Beneficiaries were also warned against switching to other banks’ payment methods, even if advised by supposed officials.
“Postbank is committed to protecting its social grant customers while offering them safe, secure and convenient ways of accessing their social grant payments.”
