Ecocash Holdings Owner Tawanda Nyambirai Recruiting for R&D Team, But Hiring Post Sparks Backlash

Prominent lawyer and businessman Tawanda Nyambirai is recruiting for a new Research and Development (R&D) team, but his specific call for “young” professionals has left some Zimbabweans feeling excluded.

Tawanda Nyambirai Hiring for R&D Team

Nyambirai, who recently gained control of Ecocash Holdings Zimbabwe Limited—the company behind Steward Bank—announced via his X (formerly Twitter) account that he is hiring for his R&D team. He stated the team would mainly support two of his ventures: TN Harlequin Luxaire, a furniture manufacturing company, and TN Gold, a gold mining and processing firm. In his post, Nyambirai said he is specifically looking for a mechanical design engineer, an industrial designer and a product designer. He stressed that he is looking for “young qualified” individuals and asked interested candidates to email their CVs directly to him.

“I am building my group Research and Development team. The team will be involved mainly with TN Harlequin Luxaire (furniture manufacturing) and TN Gold (gold mining and processing). Therefore, I am looking for:
1. A young qualified Mechanical Design Engineer;
2. A young qualified Industrial Designer, and
3. A young qualified Product Designer.

Please mail your detailed CVs to me on tn@tn.co.zw”

Job Advert Triggers Ageism Debate

While the initiative was welcomed by some, others quickly raised concerns over Nyambirai’s repeated emphasis on hiring young professionals. Critics questioned whether the wording excluded experienced, older applicants, and some interpreted it as a sign of potential ageism or reluctance to pay competitive salaries.

Here are some of the reactions:

@zamresearch:

Thought you would be aware that ageism is not exactly honourable.

@Tsombeni:

What about us who are no longer so young but so qualified and have gained a lot of work experience?

@AfrikaYedu:

Young yekudiniko nhai gweta, you just need talented people. Munenge musingadi kubhadhara here?

@Chaguta7610:

There are more professional platforms you can use to hire qualified people. Owner advertising on X means the business is still too small, or the owner is a control freak
