A social media content creator has helped reveal the conditions in which late philanthropist Jairos Jiri’s widow as she faces financial and health struggles.
A viral Facebook post by popular content creator Muku1 has drawn urgent attention to the plight of 85-year-old Gogo Betty Jiri, widow of the legendary founder of Zimbabwe’s Jairos Jiri Association for persons with disabilities.
A Call for Help for Jairos Jiri’s Widow
The emotional social media revelation came after Gogo Betty personally reached out to Muku1, having recognised him from her granddaughter’s phone. Familiar with his charitable work – particularly his assistance to amputee Marvelous Machingauta – the elderly matriarch requested a meeting with the young philanthropist.
Born in 1939 and wed at just 17, Gogo Betty is one of Zimbabwe’s most important yet unsung heroes. During her moving conversation with Muku1, she recounted how she and her late husband would personally rescue disabled individuals from the streets, providing them with shelter, dignity and hope.

Her visionary work helped establish the very foundation of the Jairos Jiri Association, changing countless lives, including that of the late Joshua Malinga, renowned disability activist and former Bulawayo Mayor.
From National Icon to Neglected Elder
Shockingly, Muku1 discovered this national treasure living in severely diminished circumstances – confined to a single room at the Jairos Jiri centre with only water in her refrigerator and relying on a broken wheelchair that severely limits her mobility.
“Her spirit remains unbroken despite her advanced years,” Muku1 observed in his poignant post. While Gogo Betty speaks proudly of her legacy, the harsh reality of her current situation – lacking basic necessities and proper mobility aids – presents a heartbreaking contrast to her monumental contributions to Zimbabwean society.

The story serves as both an inspiration and a sobering reminder that those who dedicate their lives to serving others often need support themselves in their twilight years.
