Former Minister Joel Gabbuza Fighting For His Life in Hospital After Brutal Attack by Love Rival
Former Cabinet Minister Joel Gabbuza is reportedly fighting for his life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo after a violent and targeted attack in Binga last Friday night.
Police say the former legislator was assaulted with both an axe and a knife by a man believed to be a jealous ex-boyfriend of a woman Gabbuza was allegedly seeing.

Joel Gabbuza Attack at Mistress’s Homestead
The incident occurred at a homestead in Siamakwa Village, Ward 18, where Gabbuza was reportedly spending the night with his long-time mistress.
According to ZimLive, the assailant—believed to be the woman’s ex-boyfriend—and an accomplice first slashed the tyres of Gabbuza’s vehicle before storming the house under the cover of darkness.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident:
“We are investigating a case of assault where Mr Joel Gabbuza was attacked by two suspects at a woman’s homestead in Tinde, Ward 18.”
Frenzied Knife and Axe Attack
Once inside the bedroom, the two men allegedly launched a brutal assault, stabbing the former Water Resources Minister more than a dozen times. Gabbuza sustained serious head and hand injuries in what sources described as a “frenzied” attack.
“The suspect viewed Gabbuza as the reason behind the breakup and never accepted being rejected,” said a source familiar with the situation.
Rushed to Hospital, Still in Critical Condition
Following the attack, Gabbuza—who was bleeding heavily—was rushed over 200 kilometres to Hwange Colliery Hospital for initial treatment.
He was later transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo for specialist care. As of Monday, he remains in critical condition.
