Walter Mzembi Returns to Zimbabwe and Meets Mnangagwa at State House After Years in Exile
They say in politics there are no real enemies, just shifting alliances, and Walter Mzembi’s return to Zimbabwe and meeting with Mnangagwa proves exactly that.
Walter Mzembi Returns to Zimbabwe and Meets Mnangagwa at State House
The former Foreign Affairs Minister, who fled the country after the 2017 coup that ousted Robert Mugabe, is back on home soil. According to Nehanda Radio, Mzembi quietly met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Wednesday, 11 June 2025.
Sources told the publication that Mzembi came from Zambia, where he had been living in exile following previous stints in Eswatini, where he was granted asylum, and South Africa.
Mzembi was one of several ministers linked to the G40 faction and considered loyal to Mugabe, who fled Zimbabwe after Mnangagwa came to power. His return now, and meeting with the very man he once opposed, has raised eyebrows.
Mixed Reactions from Zimbabweans
After the news broke on X (formerly Twitter), many Zimbabweans were quick to share their thoughts. Some users noted that Mzembi had been softening his tone toward Mnangagwa on social media, so this meeting wasn’t a total shock. Others praised Mnangagwa for welcoming back a former opponent, calling it a sign of leadership.
But not everyone was convinced. Some believed Mzembi’s return had less to do with unity and more to do with securing his interests. A few even suggested that Grace Mugabe or influential religious figures like Prophet Makandiwa may have had a hand in the political thawing.
Here are some of the reactions:
@ZimParrot:
Another chigananda to be reinstated.
@CadreShangrila:
NdiShumba avo. President EDM is a unifying leader. They’re all back.
@iamfarffy:
I once saw how @waltermzembi was becoming very soft with ED & I wondered why. Here is the answer. Everyone wants to be included, even in opposition; we have so many wolves in sheep’s clothing.
@RLuwanika:
Never took them seriously, I knew they were just trying to find their way back to enjoy their loot. They never had people at heart. Grace could be playing a major role in this. She has been very visible with ED now.
@NyobvoTbango:
Follow what Prophet Makandiwa mentioned recently. He said that Walter Mzembi is harmless. Just take note that Prophet Makandiwa influences some of the happenings in Zimbabwean politics. In fact, some prophets are listened to by the government.
Who’s Next? The Future of Other Exiled Politicians
Meanwhile, Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere, also linked to G40, remain in exile. Moyo continues to post regularly on X, prompting speculation that his return may be next.
Kasukuwere’s situation is more complicated. After his failed attempt to contest the 2023 presidential elections, blocked by controversial legal moves under Mnangagwa’s administration, his future in Zanu PF remains uncertain.
Still, if Mzembi can shake hands with the man who replaced his former boss, perhaps nothing is off the table.
