Only Zimbabwean at 2025 FIFA Club World Cup: Divine Lunga Rubs Shoulders with Messi, Mbappe and Haaland

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Divine Lunga has officially booked his spot in football history by becoming the first and only Zimbabwean set to feature at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup — a landmark tournament that will include 32 teams for the first time ever.

A Bigger, Bolder Club World Cup

The upcoming tournament — to be held across 11 U.S. cities and 12 stadiums — promises to be the most thrilling Club World Cup yet. With 63 matches on the schedule, it’s being touted as the first time a true global club champion will be crowned.

The host cities include major footballing hubs like Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, New York, and Seattle, among others.

Packed with Superstars

This won’t be just another tournament. The 2025 edition is stacked with talent. Thirteen players from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, including Lionel Messi, are set to feature.

Other global icons like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Vinicius Junior, and Ousmane Dembele will also grace the event. With clubs allowed to register squads of up to 35 players, the tournament will gather over 1,100 of the world’s top footballers under one banner.

Messi’s club, Inter Miami, is scheduled to kick things off against African giants Al Ahly on Saturday, 14 June 2025.

Divine Lunga to Represent Zimbabwe at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

While 81 countries will have players in the tournament, Divine Lunga stands alone as Zimbabwe’s sole representative. His journey from local football to the international spotlight has made headlines back home.

Local agent, Gibson Mahachi, who helped guide Lunga’s move from the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League to South Africa’s PSL, couldn’t hide his pride. He said it’s a powerful moment to see a Zimbabwean player standing among the very best.

“It feels great to see one of our players rubbing shoulders with the world’s greatest players,” said Mahachi.

Among the clubs, Atlético Madrid tops the chart with the most FIFA World Cup winners in their squad — six in total
