From State House Rumours to Jail: Walter Mzembi Jailed for the Weekend
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi will spend the weekend behind bars after a Harare magistrate postponed his court hearing to Monday, 16 June 2025.
Mzembi, who was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) early Friday morning, is facing charges of defaulting on three warrants of arrest. He briefly appeared in court before Magistrate Don Ndirowei, who ordered that he remain in remand prison until Monday.
Why Walter Mzembi Was Jailed Over the Weekend?
Prosecutor Tendai Shonhayi requested the postponement, saying the State had just received medical documents explaining why Mzembi missed previous court dates. She also said Mzembi intended to submit additional supporting documents.
He is being represented by Killian Mandike of Chiturumani Law Chambers.
Mzembi fled Zimbabwe in 2018, claiming he urgently needed cancer treatment in South Africa while facing charges of criminal abuse of office. After spending time in South Africa and Zambia, where he kept a low profile, he suddenly resurfaced in Harare this week.
His return sparked controversy, especially after reports claimed he met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Wednesday, 11 June 2025. However, presidential spokesperson George Charamba has dismissed those reports as false.

What Are the Charges is Mzembi Facing?
The former minister has been a fugitive since 2019, when a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court. At the heart of the case is a scandal involving US$2 million worth of television screens, which were meant to be used for public World Cup viewing zones in 2010 — but allegedly ended up in Mzembi’s personal possession.
At the time, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it would seek Interpol’s help to extradite him. But those efforts appear to have fizzled out, with Mzembi freely travelling between Zambia and South Africa, both Interpol member states.
