Zimbabwe Cricket Mocked for Congratulating South Africa’s Historic World Test Championship Win

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) faced a social media roasting after congratulating South Africa for their World Test Championship (WTC) win, with fans saying the Chevrons should be focused on fixing their own house first.

South Africa ended a 27-year drought by beating Australia by five wickets in the WTC Final at Lord’s on Saturday, 14 June 2025.

Zimbabwe Cricket posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) that read:

“Congratulations, South Africa, on winning the World Test Championship 2025! 🎉 See you at Queens Sports Club for the first Test on the 28th of June.”

Fans Tell ZC to Stop Clapping and Start Learning

Instead of joining in the celebration, many Zimbabwean fans turned the congratulatory message into a teachable moment, telling ZC to stop making biased team selections and start picking players on merit like South Africa did.

They argued that South Africa’s victory is proof that performance-based selections pay off, and said Zimbabwe Cricket is still stuck in politics, nepotism and poor planning.

Here are some of the comments/reactions:

@Mandla48780263 :

You must learn from South Africa that best players must be selected. No to quota system.

@x_weedrecords:

if you select players based on merit you will give them competition. but as usual we know the selection will be biased. kusupporter machevrons is now a waste of time.

@weymarplanet1:

This day should be a wake-up call to you as well. Select players on merit so that you can also dream of something like this.

@SunEl_Christian:

Hopefully, we can learn from the Champions and one day conquer the world. Love you Chevrons!

@manojg89:

A long wait ends. Congratulations to South Africa on a well-deserved ICC title! A special knock from Markram, solid support from Bavuma, and fiery bowling by Rabada and co. sealed the deal. Well done, South Africa.

South Africa to Play Zimbabwe in Bulawayo

South Africa is set to face Zimbabwe in a two-match Test series at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, starting on 28 June and ending on 10 July. It will be their first assignment as World Test Champions.

Captain Temba Bavuma will lead a rotated squad with big names like Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs all rested.

In their place, five uncapped players have been called up, including Lhuan-dré Pretorius, a teenage sensation who averaged 72.66 in the CSA 4-Day Series, Lesego Senokwane, another young talent who racked up 559 runs and three centuries, and Codi Yusuf, Dewald Brevis, and Prenelan Subrayen — all yet to earn their Test caps.

Pretorius and Senokwane recently starred in the South Africa ‘A’ team against West Indies ‘A’, suggesting that this could be the start of a new generation in Proteas cricket.
