Former Zimbabwean Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi appeared before Harare Regional Magistrate Donald Ndirowei yesterday, requesting the cancellation of three outstanding arrest warrants.
The politician cited serious health concerns as the reason for his absence from court proceedings in the past.
Through his legal representative, Killian Mandiki, Mzembi submitted documentation explaining that his 2018 request for passport release was specifically for overseas cancer treatment. The defence emphasised that his absence was medically justified and not an attempt to evade justice.
“My client requires ongoing specialized care and critical medication for his condition,” Mandiki told the court. “His return to Zimbabwe without coercion demonstrates his willingness to face due process.”

The defence team presented several key arguments during the court proceedings. They shared that Mzembi voluntarily returned to face charges without external pressure, and the state would not suffer prejudice from warrant cancellation.
Mzembi also cited that proper legal channels were used for all international travel and that he is prepared to surrender his passport as a condition of bail.
Mandiki further stated that his client maintains a legitimate defence for both pending cases should they proceed to trial.
Prosecution Response Pending
Acting Deputy Prosecutor-General Tendai Shonhayi informed the court that the state would file its response to the defence submissions by the end of the day yesterday. The magistrate postponed proceedings until today for a potential ruling on the default inquiry.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission recently apprehended Mzembi for allegedly violating bail conditions related to two separate cases: one involving allegations of trust property and another concerning passport control violations.
The former Tourism Minister’s case continues to draw public attention as the court weighs medical considerations against legal accountability in this high-profile matter.
