Controversial R&B artist R. Kelly required emergency hospitalisation after a medication overdose in federal prison, according to court documents.

His defence attorney alleges this incident represents part of an ongoing pattern of life-threatening neglect and intentional harm by correctional staff.

R. Kelly Hospitalised Following An Overdose

Legal representative Beau Brindley filed an urgent motion Monday detailing what he describes as a deliberate attempt to endanger Kelly’s life at Butner Federal Correctional Institution in North Carolina.

The filing states prison personnel administered medication in quantities that could prove fatal, resulting in Kelly losing consciousness in his cell.

“After being given additional pharmaceuticals against standard protocol, Mr. Kelly experienced severe dizziness, visual disturbances, and ultimately collapsed,” Brindley’s court submission states. “Medical professionals at Duke University Hospital later confirmed he had received overdose-level quantities of his prescribed medications.”

During hospitalisation, doctors reportedly discovered multiple blood clots in Kelly’s legs and lungs – a condition prison medical staff had allegedly failed to treat despite his documented history of clotting disorders properly.

Physicians recommended immediate surgery and a week-long hospital stay, but Bureau of Prisons personnel removed Kelly from care against medical advice.

“They are deliberately preventing life-saving treatment,” Brindley asserted. “This goes beyond negligence into active endangerment.”

Ongoing Safety Concerns in Custody

This incident marks the latest in a series of alleged threats against the imprisoned musician. Earlier this month, Brindley claimed prison officials placed Kelly in solitary confinement and conspired with white supremacist inmates to harm him. Federal prosecutors have dismissed these claims as baseless conspiracy theories.

The Bureau of Prisons declined specific comment, citing privacy regulations regarding inmate medical matters. A spokesperson stated:

“We do not discuss individual confinement conditions or pending legal matters.”

Kelly currently serves concurrent 30-year and 20-year sentences following 2021-2022 convictions for sex trafficking, racketeering, and child pornography offences across multiple jurisdictions.
