A chilling crime wave has shaken Bulawayo as armed robbers targeted Toyota Fortuner drivers in two separate violent incidents this month, leaving victims traumatised and authorities on high alert.

The first attack occurred on June 11 in Pumula South, where a 64-year-old Malindela resident fell victim to a brazen daylight robbery. According to police reports, the woman had just inspected property renovations when she returned to her silver Toyota Fortuner (registration AGH 2067).

“The suspect brandished a black pistol, demanding the vehicle keys while threatening to shoot if she resisted,” stated Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.

The terrified senior citizen surrendered her keys, handbag, and valuables totaling US$55,000, including the vehicle.

The thieves escaped with the SUV, groceries, and two premium smartphones – a combined haul worth US$46,450.

Police Issue Critical Safety Advisory

With both stolen vehicles still unrecovered, authorities have issued urgent safety recommendations. The public is urged to install reliable vehicle tracking systems and remain hyper-vigilant while driving, especially at night.

If followed, proceed immediately to the nearest police station and only stop in well-lit areas near commercial establishments.

“These criminals are targeting specific high-value vehicles using violent tactics,” Inspector Msebele emphasized. “Public awareness and precautionary measures are our best defenses.”

Community Assistance Needed

Bulawayo police have launched intensive investigations and appeal to anyone with information about these crimes or suspicious activities to come forward immediately.

“Your tip could prevent another family from becoming victims,” Msebele urged.

Residents are advised to report unusual behaviour or potential leads through official police channels, emphasising that community cooperation is vital in combating this dangerous trend.
