Jubilant scenes unfolded today at OR Tambo International Airport as the Proteas men’s team returned home to a thunderous welcome following their historic triumph in the ICC World Test Championship Final.
The team was greeted by scores of fans, proud relatives, and a nation still basking in the glory of a long-awaited ICC trophy.

For the first time in nearly three decades, South Africa lifted an ICC title, defeating Australia in the #WTC2025Final to be crowned World Test Champions.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Proteas head coach described the team’s recent ICC World Test Championship triumph as a deeply significant achievement.
“Winning the World Test Championship is special,” he said.
Conrad added that the team would use this moment as motivation moving forward, saying,
“We will draw inspiration from this and aim to bring home more trophies.”

Star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and several teammates interacted warmly with supporters, shaking hands, signing autographs, and posing for pictures. The heartfelt moments reinforced the deep connection between the Proteas and their supporters.
Adding a touching layer to the celebration, young fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who is widely considered the future of South African pace attack, was also among the fans at the airport.
“I’m looking forward to playing with Kagiso Rabada and learning from him,” Maphaka said with admiration.

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie praised the Proteas’ achievement, linking it to the country’s broader sporting dominance.
“We have the best rugby team, and we now have the best cricket team… South Africa is the best sporting nation in the world,” McKenzie declared.
