Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has sent a strong message to businesspeople who operate outside the bounds of legitimacy, warning that their time is almost up.

Speaking at the 2025 Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Annual Congress in Victoria Falls, Chiwenga didn’t mince his words. He said those who manipulate the economy through shady operations would soon face the consequences.

He warned that the country would no longer tolerate briefcase operators and fake entrepreneurs who have no clear source of income or legitimate business activity.

“The day of reckoning is inevitable for those who undermine our economic integrity by engaging in shadowy dealings. It is coming. We must shun unscrupulous so-called businesspeople operating from briefcases with no traceable capital or legitimate enterprise,” he said.

Chiwenga also took aim at what he called the “culture of phantom entrepreneurship”, where individuals appear wealthy without any explanation of how they made their money.

No Wealth Without Work

He dismissed the idea that wealth can just appear out of thin air, saying Zimbabwe’s future must be built on hard work and honesty, not smoke and mirrors. He stressed that real businesses are grounded in discipline, sacrifice, and value creation, not shortcuts or suspicious deals.

“This culture of phantom entrepreneurship, where money appears without any known source, is not only economically corrosive but ethically bankrupt. We all know that money does not fall from the heavens like manna. The times of Moses are no longer here. Real businesses are built through hard work, discipline, sacrifice and value creation,” he said.
