Minister Sanyatwe Apologises for Declaring Zanu PF Will Rule “Until Donkeys Grow Horns”
The Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church says Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, has apologised for making political comments during a church service—comments that have sparked outrage and concern across the country.
Sanyatwe, a former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander, told congregants at an SDA church in Nyanga North that the ruling party, Zanu PF, would govern Zimbabwe “forever” and “until donkeys grow horns.” He made the remarks while accompanying his wife, Chido, and controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who had made donations to the church during an evangelistic campaign.
But his choice to politicise the pulpit didn’t go down well.
The SDA Church, through a formal letter signed by Zibusiso Trust Ndlovu—executive secretary of the Zimbabwe East Union Conference (ZEUC)—distanced itself from Sanyatwe’s comments and reaffirmed its strict apolitical stance.
The church said it does not support political messages of any kind during services, and what Sanyatwe said was completely out of line.
Ndlovu wrote that while public officials may be invited to attend church functions as a courtesy, the church does not allow any form of political endorsement or commentary from the pulpit. He stressed this rule was “non-negotiable.”
The letter acknowledged that Sanyatwe had been made aware of the breach immediately and that he had offered an apology to church leaders the same day. Part of the letter reads:
“Recent statements made during an evangelistic campaign hosted by one of our local churches have understandably caused concern. While it is consistent with our practice to invite public officials to our events as a gesture of courtesy and mutual respect (CM 126-127), any partisan political remarks made were not anticipated, were not authorised by the church leadership, and do not reflect the position of the Church. The matter was immediately brought to the attention of the speaker, who graciously acknowledged the concern and extended an apology to church leadership on the same day.”
