Highlanders FC players have received a much-needed windfall following Wicknell Chivayo’s donation.
The much-anticipated financial boost for Highlanders Football Club has become a reality as the first substantial payment from businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s sponsorship deal has been received.
The initial instalment of $250,000 marks the beginning of what promises to be a transformative period for the historic football club.

US$57,000 of the newly acquired funds has been immediately earmarked to settle outstanding player bonuses from both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Jabulani Nkomo, overseeing the sponsorship implementation as representative of the Chivayo initiative, confirmed the rapid allocation during recent club discussions.
“Our primary focus in the June 26 executive meeting was ensuring player satisfaction,” Nkomo stated. “The banking instructions have been processed to transfer these bonus payments directly to the athletes’ accounts, with transactions expected to complete imminently.”
Quarterly Support System Established
This payment represents the first of four planned quarterly disbursements that will collectively deliver the full $1 million pledged by Chivayo.
The flamboyant businessman, who has become increasingly visible in Zimbabwean football circles, previously explained that his motivation stems from a profound personal commitment to the club’s legacy.

Chivayo’s relationship with Highlanders extends beyond this current sponsorship. Earlier this year, he intervened to resolve a $27,000 FIFA-related debt concerning former coaches Baltemar Brito and Antonio Joao Torres, effectively lifting a potential transfer ban that threatened the club’s operations.

With the initial funds now secured, club officials are preparing to address additional organisational priorities.
“We’re scheduling follow-up meetings to identify other critical areas needing immediate attention,” Nkomo revealed. “This sponsorship represents a turning point for Highlanders – but with this financial support comes heightened expectations for on-field performance.”
The agreement has electrified the Highlanders’ fan base, with supporters eagerly anticipating how the financial boost will translate to competitive success.
