“Let’s Work Together”: Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume Showers Praise The Government For The New Roads

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has showered praise on the government for the current roadworks in the country.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume Praises Government For The New Roads

Mafume made these remarks at the Local Governance Policy Dialogue Meeting organised by the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA). The CHRA is a body that “advocates and lobbies for good municipal service and local governance.”

The Harare Mayor took note of the development happening across the country, adding that good things should be lauded:

“Let us all celebrate the good roads without looking at who built it.”

Before the 2023 elections and the departure of Nelson Chamisa from the reins in the Citizens Coalition for Change, Mafume had a confrontational approach towards central government. However, he has been more welcoming and conciliatory lately.

The Harare Mayor told delegates at the Local Governance Policy Dialogue Meeting that the Council needs to join hands and work together with the government:

“We, as the Harare Council, have taken an approach of saying the election season is over. We need to work and compliment each other with the government and give a better service. We need to cooperate on water and refuse collection services and roads. It will help us. Flowing raw sewage will not affect an opposition or ruling party supporter only. Cholera will still affect everyone the same. So we want to work together to avoid these unnecessary conflicts.”

Last week, Mafume joined Transport Minister Felix Mhona in officially opening the recently completed Julius Nyerere Way to the public.

At the event, President Mnangagwa told Mayor Mafume:

“I exhort you, the Mayor of Harare. Stand up, young man. Well, don’t worry about his height. He is the Mayor of the Capital City of Zimbabwe. My dear brother Mafume. Scale up the beautification of our capital city and encourage other hotel groups and businesses to adopt spaces surrounding their entities.”
