Harare firefighters are being praised for saving numerous homes in Fidelity Southview Park from a fire that started as a small garbage fire.
The recycling storage compound, packed with flammable plastics and packaging materials, became engulfed in flames after nearby rubbish burning spiralled out of control.
Fire crews responded with lightning speed to the Harare South incident, deploying multiple water tankers in a coordinated effort to contain the rapidly spreading fire. Despite the intense heat and challenging conditions, firefighters made repeated trips to replenish water supplies, eventually subduing the blaze before it could reach adjacent residential properties.

Harare Firefighters Save Homes In Fidelity Southview Park And Sally Mugabe Hospital

The recycling plant operation marked the second major emergency call for firefighters that day. Earlier, the same team had successfully contained a separate fire outbreak at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, preventing a potential tragedy at the medical facility.
“These back-to-back incidents truly tested our capabilities,” noted one responding officer. “But our training and equipment upgrades allowed us to handle both situations effectively.”
The successful operations have shown improved response capacity following recent additions to the city’s firefighting fleet. New fire tenders acquired through international partnerships have significantly boosted the brigade’s emergency response effectiveness.
As Zimbabwe enters its annual high-risk fire season between July and November, these incidents serve as both a warning about fire dangers and a reassurance of the Fire Brigade’s preparedness. Residents can take comfort knowing that dedicated professionals stand ready to protect lives and property against fire threats.

The twin emergencies highlight the crucial role of fire services in urban safety. Fire officials urge citizens to exercise extreme caution with open flames, particularly during the dry season when fire risks escalate dramatically.
Through their courageous actions, Harare’s firefighters have once again proven their indispensable value to the community, turning potential disasters into stories of successful emergency management.
