Beneficiaries over 75 will receive R2 330, while those aged 60–74 will get R2 310 this July.

SASSA is cutting costs in 2025 by tightening eligibility checks and reducing wasteful spending across its systems.
The agency now strictly checks each grant recipient’s income and identity to ensure eligibility.
If SASSA suspects ineligibility, your grant may be paused until you visit an office with supporting documents.
This is a major change, as previous rules guaranteed three months’ notice before a review.
Biometric Verifications Causing Concern
Since May, smartphone verification has been introduced without warning, upsetting many advocacy groups.
Critics argue that expecting poor, elderly citizens to have smartphones and internet is unrealistic and unfair.
Those without smart ID cards or digital photos are also being affected by the new system.
How to Apply for the SASSA Old-Age Grant (2025)
To qualify, you must:
- Be over 60 years old
- Have a valid South African ID
- Provide proof of residence (e.g., utility bill)
- Submit marital status documents
- Show proof of income, assets, and pensions
- Provide 3 months’ bank statements
- Include any UIF documents or previous employer certificates
- If widowed, provide a will and distribution accounts

To remain eligible:
- If single: earn under R8 070/month and own under R1 372 800 in assets
- If married: earn under R16 140/month and own under R2 745 600 in assets
Appeals and Exclusions
More agencies are now involved in verifying grant eligibility, including Home Affairs and the UIF.
About 200 000 beneficiaries have had to re-verify details since stricter checks began in May.
If your application is declined, you have 90 days to appeal by submitting the required documents at a SASSA office.
