Bulawayo Man Crushed By Train After Crossing While Wearing Headphones

A Bulawayo man lost his life after being struck by a moving train near Bulawayo’s central station after crossing the railway while wearing headphones. Authorities confirm this marks the third fatal railway accident within 48 hours in the region.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) reported that the tragic event occurred on Tuesday at approximately 12:55 PM. Preliminary investigations suggest the victim was walking alongside active train tracks while wearing noise-cancelling headphones, potentially unaware of the approaching locomotive.

“The NRZ deeply regrets to confirm another fatality on our rail network today. Emergency responders and police personnel are currently working to establish the victim’s identity and notify next of kin,” stated an official NRZ release.

This incident represents the third railway-related death reported since Monday, prompting urgent safety reminders from transportation officials. Other incidents happened in Mutare and Zvishavane yesterday, and they led to death. The NRZ emphasised the critical importance of pedestrian awareness near active rail lines. If someone is to cross a railway line, it is crucial that they remain vigilant for trains.

Pedestrians are to maintain constant vigilance when near railway tracks and avoid using headphones or mobile devices that impair hearing. People should only cross tracks at designated pedestrian crossings and remember trains require a significant stopping distance.

Local law enforcement and railway officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward as they work to prevent similar tragedies.

The NRZ extends condolences to the victim’s family and reminds the public that railway corridors demand extreme caution at all times.
