The charges stem from a recent satirical column in the Zimbabwe Independent that critically examined Zimbabwe’s leadership within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The piece, published in the newspaper’s Muckraker section, characterised the regional body as a ‘trade union of dictators’, prompting swift legal action from authorities.

Alpha Media Holdings proprietor Trevor Ncube has publicly expressed concern about Zaba’s detention, revealing the editor was under medical care prior to her arrest. He wrote a post on X yesterday saying:
““Police have an order to detain Faith overnight at Harare Central Police Station. Faith is currently unwell and was recuperating on bedrest. #JournalismIsNotACrime,”
Press Freedom Under Scrutiny
International media watchdogs have repeatedly criticised Zimbabwe’s use of legislation criminalising perceived insults to political leadership, arguing such laws create a climate of fear among journalists. This is the second journalist working under Alpha Media that has been arrested this year.
