Dorcas Mutengwa was sleeping with her children, ages three and seven, when she awoke to find her bedroom engulfed in flames. The strong odour of gasoline filled the air as the panicked mother attempted to douse the fire with water before realising the severity of the situation.

Despite suffering severe burns across her body, Mutengwa managed to rescue both children from the inferno. The seven-year-old sustained burns to his hands and nose, while the toddler suffered injuries to her right ear.

The attack followed months of escalating threats from Paul Zuze, Mutengwa’s estranged husband. Court records reveal that Zuze had previously been arrested for violating a protection order after threatening his ex-wife with a kitchen knife when she refused his tlof tlof advances last November.

Neighbours reported seeing a man fleeing the scene in a vehicle matching Zuze’s description. Fire investigators confirmed someone had poured gasoline on the roof before igniting the blaze, which destroyed nearly all the family’s possessions, including furniture, appliances, and clothing.

Community leaders are calling for stricter enforcement of protection orders and increased support services for abuse victims.
