Family Business: Mother and Son Arrested in Beitbridge with 25kg of Mbanje

A mother and her son have been arrested after they were caught transporting a massive stash of mbanje.

The mbanje was found hidden in a truck along the Beitbridge-Gwanda highway.

Dramatic Bust at Police Roadblock

The two, identified as Sibusisiwe Ncube (43) and her 27-year-old son, Stephen Ncube, were stopped by police officers on Saturday at the 90-kilometre peg near Makhado, Beitbridge.

According to authorities, the vehicle, which had foreign number plates, raised suspicions during routine checks.

A search of the truck uncovered 12 tightly packed cobs of dagga weighing approximately 25 kilogrammes.

Police Confirm Arrests on Social Media

In a statement posted on their official social media platforms, the police confirmed the arrests and provided details of the operation.

“On 05/07/2025, members of the police deployed at a roadblock at the 90 kilometre peg along Beitbridge-Gwanda Road, Makhado, Beitbridge arrested Sibusisiwe Ncube (43) and her son, Stephen Ncube (27) for unlawful possession of 12 cobs of dagga weighing approximately 25 kilogrammes. The two suspects were aboard a truck with foreign number plates,” read the statement.

Investigations Underway

Police say investigations are still ongoing to establish where the dagga came from and its intended destination.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the possession and transportation of illegal substances.

News of the arrest has sparked criticism on social media. Many netizens expressed shock that a mother and son would allegedly work together in the illegal mbanje trade.
