Actor Fanuel Tonganayi, Firimoni From Gringo, Dies Months After Begging Wicknell Chivayo For Help

Beloved Zimbabwean actor Fanuel Tonganayi, best known for his iconic role as Firimoni in the hit comedy series Gringo, has passed away. His death comes just months after he publicly appealed to controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo for financial assistance—a plea that went unanswered.

Tonganayi, who brought laughter to thousands with his portrayal of the bumbling but lovable Firimoni, had struggled in recent years. In a heartfelt video five months ago, he reached out for help, but no aid came.

A comedy legend remembered

Tonganayi’s role as Firimoni made him a household name. His character, caught between Gringo’s mischief and Madhumbe’s schemes, became a fan favourite for his hilarious misfortunes.

“Even today, when you meet Fanuel Tonganayi on the street, the temptation to laugh is irresistible,” wrote The Herald in 2016. “He played the Firimoni character to the gallery, and many people in his neighbourhood don’t even know his real name.”

Scenes like Firimoni being tricked onto a roof overnight or stung by bees while climbing a tree left audiences in stitches. His natural comedic timing turned him into an unforgettable part of Zimbabwean TV history.

From driver to star

Tonganayi never planned to be an actor. He joined ZBC as a driver in 1993 and only stepped into the role of Firimoni as a last-minute replacement.

“I briefly read the script and went on set. Everyone was happy with my performance,” he once recalled. “I knew how to portray a dull character, but I didn’t know the role would be so popular.”

Despite his success, Tonganayi faced financial struggles later in life. After leaving ZBC, he turned to farming in Hurungwe, where he grew tobacco and ran a grinding mill.

An unanswered plea

Earlier this year, Tonganayi made a desperate appeal to Wicknell Chivayo, a flamboyant businessman known for his lavish spending. The video circulated widely, but no help arrived.

His death has left fans mourning not just the actor, but the man behind the laughter—a man who, despite bringing joy to so many, faced hardship in his final months.
