Excel College School Director Arrested for Swindling Students’ ZIMSEC Exam Fees

A Harare school director has been arrested over allegations he pocketed money meant for students’ ZIMSEC examination fees and later offered a client’s vehicle as collateral for his personal debt.

Excel College Operator in Court Over Fraud

Munyaradzi Rukweza, 41, who operates an unregistered private school known as Excel College, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to today for bail considerations.

According to prosecutors, between February and July this year, Rukweza collected funds from several Form Four students, claiming he would pay their examination registration fees to the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC).

Students Lose Over US$1,600

It is alleged that Rukweza failed to remit the payments to ZIMSEC and instead converted the funds to his personal use.

As a result, the students were prejudiced of a total of US$1,630. Authorities confirmed that none of the money has been recovered.

Accused Also Faces Theft of Trust Property Charge

In a separate matter, Rukweza is facing a second charge of theft of trust property.

Prosecutors said that on March 1, he entered into an agreement with another complainant to use the complainant’s Toyota Noah for school activities at Excel College.

However, instead of honoring the agreement and paying the complainant US$800 as agreed, Rukweza allegedly offered the vehicle as surety to a third party for a debt he personally owed.

Another Harare School Under Fire Over Fake Cambridge Exams

In a separate development, parents and guardians of 16 students at Destiny Achievers College in Harare are calling on authorities to act swiftly after an alleged exam scam left their children without valid Cambridge O-Level results.

According to the parents, the school’s owner, Ms Cynthia Gambiza, collected exam fees last year to register the learners for the November 2023 Cambridge exams. However, the school allegedly never completed the registrations.

Parents said they were later told the students could sit for the exams in June 2024 as a second chance. When June arrived, the school reportedly organized what they claimed were Cambridge exams at a rented venue, saying it was in partnership with a Cambridge-accredited institution.

The parents revealed that these exams were fake, and their children were never officially registered with Cambridge. Collectively, the families paid about US$11,000 for the exams and associated costs.
