Stepmother And Father Arrested After 17-Year-Old Girl Dies In Brutal Beating
A 38-year-old woman has been arrested after she allegedly teamed up with the teenager’s biological father to brutally beat her to death for not sleeping at home.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the arrest of Maria Chibego (38) and Chakupiwa Kamupira (48) following the death of Rumbidzai Kamupira (17) on 14 July 2025.
According to police, the horrific incident happened at Chimusasa Business Centre in Nyanga, a remote area in the eastern part of Zimbabwe.
Girl Beaten With Open Hands And A Switch
In a chilling statement posted on X at 7:15 PM on 15 July 2025, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said:
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Chakupiwa Kamupira (48) and Maria Chibego (38) in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Chimusasa Business Centre, Nyanga on 14/07/25 in which Rumbidzai Kamupira (17) died.
Maria Chibego (38), who is the victim’s stepmother, assaulted her with open hands and a switch after she did not sleep at home on 13/07/25.
The victim’s father, Chakupiwa Kamupira, joined in and assaulted the victim with a switch. The victim died upon admission at a local clinic.”
The teenager’s crime, according to the police report, was that she had not slept at home the night before.
Died After Being Taken To Clinic
Police said the victim collapsed and was rushed to a local clinic where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Details surrounding where the girl had been on the night of 13 July were not disclosed by police. Investigations are still underway, and no plea has yet been entered by the accused pair.
The community is said to be in shock over the alleged assault and tragic death.
Brutality Sparks Public Outrage On X
Users on social media reacted with disbelief and sadness.
One user posted:
“How do two adults gang up on a child like that? This is heartbreaking.”
Another wrote:
“No child deserves to die like that. This was pure cruelty.”
Many demanded justice, with some calling for stricter laws to protect children from domestic violence.
The incident has ignited debate on step-parent abuse, and corporal punishment in rural communities.
As of now, both suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
