Bulawayo Man, 21, Dies After Row With Mother Over Spilled Cooking Oil
A 21-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb died after drinking rat poison in a fit of rage following a dispute with his mother over spilled cooking oil, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Thabiso Ndlovu tragically passed away at Mpilo Central Hospital on 14 July, two days after ingesting the poisonous substance at his home.
Row Erupted Over Spilled Cooking Oil
Zimlive reports that according to Bulawayo police, the incident occurred around 1PM on 12 July when Ndlovu had an argument with his 41-year-old mother.
Police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the dispute was triggered by spilled cooking oil.
“The warning did not go down well with the now deceased, who got angry and drank rat killer poison,” said Inspector Msebele.
“His mother saw him vomiting and when she inquired, he admitted to having consumed the poison.”
An ambulance was called, and Ndlovu was rushed to Mpilo Hospital, where he was placed under observation.
He Died Two Days Later
On the morning of 14 July, the family received devastating news.
“His mother received a call from the hospital informing her that her son had died,” said Inspector Msebele.
No foul play is suspected, though police have launched an investigation into the matter.
The cost of spilled cooking oil in Zimbabwe has risen sharply in recent months, with a 2-litre bottle averaging ZAR75.00 (R75.00), contributing to household tensions in some low-income communities.
Community Urged To Seek Mental Health Support
Police said the incident adds to a rising number of suicides linked to domestic stress and unresolved emotional issues.
Authorities have urged families to resolve disputes peacefully and to seek help where necessary.
“We encourage members of the public to talk to someone when they are in distress,” said Inspector Msebele.
“There are resources available, and we want to prevent further loss of life.”
Local mental health advocates say emotional outbursts triggered by economic hardship are becoming more common, especially among youth.
Community leaders in Cowdray Park have also called for increased awareness about mental health services.
“We are heartbroken,” said one community elder who asked not to be named.
Police investigations remain ongoing.
