Eastern Cape police have declared a safe and successful election, despite some incidents earlier this week.
Around 25% of the votes have been captured in that province, with the African National Congress(ANC) leading with over 60%.
The police said that only a few incidents threatened to disrupt the elections this week, when taxi drivers and communities protested in Mthatha and Keiskamahoek.
But Provincial Commissioner Nomthetheleli Mene said that while there was a shortage of resources in some districts, they did manage to get more members to fill in the gap.
“But I must say standing here today, I’m standing proudly to the whole nation of South Africa to say that the Eastern Cape province, we had a successful election.”
But as the counting continues, police say their plan is far from over and they plan to monitor the situation well beyond the vote counting and this will include results announcements and celebrations in the province.
