Two maids have been arrested after they were caught for stealing US$50K from a former NSSA boss who was their employer while she was receiving medical treatment.
Elizabeth Chitiga, who once held the position of general manager at the state pension fund, has seen two of her maids, Loveness Chagonda and Bevelima Chiroodza, brought before the courts to answer charges of theft. The pair recently appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai.
The prosecution outlined a detailed case, alleging that the theft was a calculated act. The court heard that in December 2021, Mrs. Chitiga had sold two of her vehicles and secured the proceeds, a sum of US$45,000, inside a safe located within a room in her home.

With Mrs. Chitiga frequently hospitalised due to illness during this period, the two accused maids were allegedly the only individuals with consistent access to the property and the room in question.
Prosecutors stated,
“The complainant confirmed the money was still intact in October of 2022. However, it is the State’s case that between that time and January 2023, the accused persons connived and stole the money, along with several other household items.”
Surprisingly, the substantial loss was not reported to the authorities immediately. It is understood that Mrs. Chitiga made the devastating discovery later in 2023 but was prevented from taking swift action due to ongoing health complications that required her attention.
It was only in June of this year that a formal report was finally lodged with the police, leading to the swift arrest of the two women. Law enforcement officials have confirmed the recovery of some of the stolen goods. “Items including a red suitcase and assorted sheets, identified as belonging to the complainant, were recovered from the accused,” a source close to the investigation confirmed.
