Air Zimbabwe Introduces Daily Harare–Mutare Flights

AirZim launches Harare – Mutare flights

Air Zimbabwe has announced that it will introduce daily return flights between Harare and Mutare from 8 to 14 September to support the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Expo.

The Expo will run from 10 to 12 September in Mutare and will, for the first time, be hosted in the Eastern Highlands.

A pilot project to test demand

Air Zimbabwe confirmed the flights in a press release issued on 28 August 2025. The airline’s chief executive officer, Mr Edmund Makona, said the move was designed to provide convenience to exhibitors, delegates, and visitors attending the Expo while also exploring the viability of the new route.

Introducing the flights, Mr Makona said:

“This operation is a pilot project. We are testing the market, understanding demand, and exploring the long-term viability of this route. If the demand is there, Air Zimbabwe will be ready to make it a permanent feature of our network.”

The airline further noted that the route would link seamlessly with Harare–Victoria Falls flights, offering travellers the chance to combine destinations in one journey.

Mr Makona explained that passengers from Mutare would also gain access to regional and international routes through Harare.

Boosting connectivity and tourism

The new Harare–Mutare flights form part of Air Zimbabwe’s turnaround strategy, which aims to expand its network, strengthen domestic connectivity, and boost the tourism sector.

Mr Makona emphasised the national airline’s wider role in the country’s development, stating:

“Air Zimbabwe is more than an airline. We are a bridge that connects people, cultures, and opportunities. These Harare–Mutare flights are proof of our dedication to growth, our belief in Zimbabwe’s tourism potential, and our determination to keep the nation flying high.”

The airline confirmed it had collaborated with the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, National Handling Services, and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority to ensure smooth operations during the trial period.

Easier ticket booking for passengers

Passengers travelling on the new flights will also benefit from online booking through a partnership with PayNow, a move that Air Zimbabwe said would improve accessibility and convenience.

The Eastern Highlands, known for its scenic landscapes, will host the Sanganai/Hlanganani Expo for the first time. The Expo is a premier international tourism showcase and is expected to attract participants from across the globe.

Air Zimbabwe said the Harare–Mutare flights were introduced to ensure that the event was fully supported, while also giving the airline a chance to evaluate the potential of the route beyond the Expo.
