Alick Macheso’s Bodyguard Faces Court After Brutal Assault on Reporter

The attack, which left Muponde seriously injured, took place on 7 August at a bar in Granary Park, where the journalist lives. Witnesses describe the assault as unprovoked, but Gweshe claims he was acting in self-defence and now plans to file an assault case against Muponde.

According to reports, Muponde sustained severe head and facial injuries. He was hit with a knuckle-duster, rendering him unconscious, and lost three teeth in the attack. His injuries also included a deep forehead laceration requiring heavy bandaging, swelling and bruising around his lips and jaw, and temporary loss of consciousness.

Police Action and Delayed Statement

Gweshe only gave his statement to police on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, days after the attack, while Muponde had already reported the case at Marimba Police Station. Attempts at an out-of-court settlement briefly moved forward but later fell apart over disagreements about payment.

Witnesses also gave statements, though Muponde himself was not present when Gweshe spoke to the authorities. The case has drawn attention due to Muponde’s reporting on sensitive political matters, highlighting concerns over attacks on journalists covering critical issues.
