Another Chinhoyi University of Technology Dies

Tragedy has once again struck Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) after another student, Mclarian Chando, died from injuries sustained in a road accident in Chiredzi. His death comes just days after Panashe Mwinga, who had recently graduated, also lost her life in a car crash while travelling to Harare.

Chando, popularly known as DJ Killers, was a Level 3:1 Information Technology student. He was well-loved on campus, not just for his studies but also for his passion for music and lively personality.

The university community described him as a young man full of promise. Malvin Saint Madanda, CUT SRC Minister of External Affairs, Information and Publicity, said Chando’s passing was heartbreaking. He explained that Chando had a remarkable spirit and left an impact on everyone who interacted with him—whether through his music, his cheerful presence, or his kindness.

Madanda added that despite being transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for critical care, Chando did not survive his injuries. He said the loss was devastating, not only to Chando’s family and friends but to the entire university community. To honour his life, the SRC declared Monday, 1 September 2025, as Black Monday, calling on all students to wear black as a mark of mourning and remembrance.

One of Chando’s fellow students remembered him as humble and inspiring, saying his love for music and his constant smile lifted others around him.

Chando’s death adds to a worrying trend at CUT. He is the fifth student to die in just nine months, with three of those deaths caused by accidents. Two other students recently took their own lives, painting a grim picture for the university community that is now reeling from loss after loss.

Just last week, Panashe Mwinga was mourned by fellow students and lecturers after she died in a road accident only hours after graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual and Communication Multimedia.
