Another Man Killed by Train at Chinhoyi Station, Fourth Case in a Month

A tragic scene unfolded at Chinhoyi Railway Station on Thursday, 17 July 2025, after a man was hit and killed by a train. This marks the fourth separate fatal train accident in just one month, according to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).

The NRZ confirmed that the incident happened around 4:06 PM. Sadly, the man died on the spot and was not carrying any identity documents. Police are still trying to find out who he is.

Eyewitnesses told authorities that the man had headphones on when he was run over, meaning he probably didn’t hear the train coming.

The NRZ warned the public to stay alert and avoid distractions when near railway lines.

“We appeal to members of the public to be vigilant while walking close to railway tracks to avoid such incidents,” the NRZ said.

This latest tragedy comes after three other people died in similar accidents across Bulawayo, Mutare, and Zvishavane earlier this month.

In Bulawayo, a man who was also using earphones died after a train hit him near the main railway station around 12:55 PM on 1 July 2025.

That same day in Mutare, a train crew reported running over an unresponsive man lying on the tracks at Odzi Siding.

On June 20, Peter Vengesayi, from Zeederburg Village, Zvishavane, lost his life after being struck by a train while lying on the tracks.

NRZ officials expressed serious concern over the rising number of preventable train deaths, not just from people walking carelessly but also from drivers failing to give way at railway crossings.

Many residents, especially in high-density suburbs, have developed a habit of using railway tracks as shortcuts or jogging paths, ignoring the dangers.

In response, the NRZ says it is now working with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to launch more community outreach programmes and rail safety campaigns in a bid to reduce these avoidable deaths.
