Car Fires Terrorise Bindura Residents Again In Midnight Attacks
Residents of Chiwaridzo in Bindura are living in fear after four cars were mysteriously set ablaze in the early hours of Thursday, just weeks after a similar incident rocked the area.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed investigations are underway, as families count their losses and demand answers.
‘It’s Too Much Now’
One of the affected residents, Vimbai Kamhuka, described how she was woken up by her neighbour with the shocking news.
“Our car is one of the cars burnt around two in the morning, the other cars were burnt around four in the morning,” she said.
“Only the fender of our car was destroyed, as our car was burnt from the back, but the others were burnt completely.
People who are burning cars in our area are making life difficult, it’s too much now. Since last year, they have been doing that. When they burnt down this one, they burnt three others in the area behind.
We would ask the police to do night patrols.”
Her family was lucky to contain the fire, but neighbours weren’t as fortunate — some lost their vehicles entirely.
A Pattern Of Destruction
This is not the first time Chiwaridzo residents have woken up to burnt-out vehicles.
“On June 3, my lorry was destroyed, the whole corner was damaged,” said a resident who asked not to be named.
“We thought it was a short circuit, but we only realised three other people had lost their cars in a similar manner.”
Another resident warned that the situation could turn deadly:
“People destroying cars are killers because such destruction is equal to murder.
So we hope the police will investigate this matter and bring these criminals to book.”
The suspected arson attacks have now left the entire community on edge.
Police Investigations Underway
The ZRP says it is taking the matter seriously and has already begun forensic investigations.
“We dispatched experts from the forensic science inspectorate and CID Bindura.
So far, investigations are still in progress. However, the motive behind this malicious damage to property is unknown,” said Mashonaland Central Police Spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe.
Inspector Mundembe urged the public to work closely with law enforcement.
“We urge members of the public to join hands with the police to patrol our neighbourhood to enhance the safety and security of our property.”
Police are also appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
The full cost of the damage has not been disclosed, but residents say the losses run into thousands of US dollars.
