Harare Driver Jailed for Fatal Borrowdale Road Accident
A Harare man has been jailed after causing a fatal accident in Borrowdale, which claimed the life of a 53-year-old passenger.
24 Months Behind Bars for Culpable Homicide
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Ernest Ringisai Mauna (39) was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment by the Harare Magistrates’ Court, with 12 months suspended. He will serve an effective 24 months after being found guilty of culpable homicide.
The accident occurred on 14 April 2025 along Harare Drive in Borrowdale, where Mauna, who was speeding in a Nissan Hardbody, failed to maintain a safe following distance. He rammed into a Toyota Wish ahead of him, triggering a multi-vehicle collision.
Chain Reaction Crash Claims Life
The crash involved several vehicles, including a Nissan Sunny, a Powerstar heavy truck, and a Honda Fit. The force of the impact pushed the Nissan Sunny into the oncoming lane, where it collided head-on with the Powerstar.
Tragically, Andrew Makuwaza (53), who was a passenger in the Nissan Sunny, died instantly. Investigations confirmed that Mauna was driving at excessive speed and failed to react when the accident became unavoidable.
Licence Cancelled After Conviction
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered the cancellation of Mauna’s driver’s licence classes 2, 4, and 5, effectively disqualifying him from driving both light and heavy motor vehicles.
Authorities have since urged motorists to exercise caution, patience, and responsibility on the roads, warning that reckless driving continues to cost lives and will not go unpunished.

Chillmaster’s Sentence Reviewed
Meanwhile, Zimdancehall artist Kudakwashe Gift Hombarume, better known as Chillmaster, was recently slapped with a nine-month driving ban after a review of his initial sentencing.
The ruling came from a Mbare magistrate, following an order by Judge President Mary Zimba-Dube, who flagged major flaws in the original judgment. She gave the lower court 30 days to re-examine the case and issue a proper ruling.
