Bulawayo Company Repackages Spoiled Stockfeed Rice And Sells It For Human Consumption

Bulawayo Company Caught Repackaging Rice Meant For Animal Feed

A Bulawayo firm has been accused of repackaging spoiled rice originally meant for stock feed and selling it to unsuspecting consumers for human consumption.

Rice Confiscated After Complaint

The Herald reports that, according to the Bulawayo City Council report dated 10 September 2025, Flynote Investments (Pvt) Ltd, operating under the Evergold brand, was at the centre of the scandal.

The council confirmed that 322 tonnes of rice were seized and forwarded to the Government Analyst Laboratory for urgent testing.

The report stated:

“Water-damaged bulk rice for stock feed was being packaged and sold for human consumption. The rice was being packaged in a stock feed factory with extremely poor hygienic conditions.”

Authorities said the facility where the rice was handled did not meet food-grade standards and was operating in an environment prone to mould, bacterial contamination, and chemical residue.

The report further noted that the firm, located in Thorngrove, Bulawayo, was repackaging the rice and placing it on the market for unsuspecting residents to buy and consume.

When contacted on the matter yesterday, no comment was obtained from the company.

Public Alarm Over Hygiene

Council officials expressed alarm over the risks posed to consumers who may have unknowingly purchased the repackaged product.

Bulawayo residents also expressed concern after the revelations.

Council Action And Wider Concerns

The case was listed in the latest council minutes alongside several other public complaints, ranging from noise disturbances to sanitation problems across the city.

However, the Flynote Investments incident drew the most attention because of the scale of the seizure and the direct threat to public health.

The confiscation of the rice is expected to be followed by laboratory results to confirm the extent of contamination. Authorities have not yet announced whether criminal charges or penalties will follow.

The report emphasised that food intended for human consumption must be handled only in licensed, food-grade facilities that adhere to strict hygiene regulations.

The matter has now been referred to the relevant government departments for further action.
