A Bulawayo woman has been remanded in custody after pouring boiling water on her sister’s maid. Privilege Moyo, 38, of Emganwini suburb, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Archie Wochiwunga facing a charge of physical abuse.
The court heard that the unprovoked attack occurred on the 28th of August. Prosecutor Mrs Audrey Kufandikanwe stated that the accused, who is the sister of the complainant’s actual employer, was in the kitchen when she suddenly seized the pot and threw its scalding contents onto the defenceless maid. The victim, Bethia Moyo, sustained severe burns to her face and chest in the shocking incident.

Authorities were left stunned by the sheer brutality of the act, for which no motive was immediately provided. The prosecutor outlined the facts to the magistrate, detailing how the attack unfolded without warning or preceding altercation.
“The accused suddenly grabbed a pot of boiling water from the kitchen and poured it on Bethia Moyo without provocation,” Mrs Kufandikanwe told the court.
The victim was left screaming in agony before being rushed to hospital for emergency care.
Victim Hospitalised as Attacker Awaits Mental Evaluation
Bethia Moyo remains admitted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), where she is receiving ongoing treatment for her traumatic injuries. Meanwhile, the legal process for her alleged attacker is underway. In a significant ruling, Magistrate Wochiwunga remanded Privilege Moyo in custody until the 17th of September.

The court has ordered that she undergo a psychiatric evaluation by two separate doctors to ascertain her mental state at the time of the alleged offence. The matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, which led to the accused’s subsequent arrest.
