Chatunga’s lawyer, Muchiwande Sithole of F Chauke and Associates, told the Beitbridge court that President Robert Mugabe’s son skipped court because he had undergone surgery in Harare.

During his initial court appearance, Beitbridge Resident Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba remanded Chatunga out of custody for a provisional trial on free bail last month.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reported that Chatunga is facing two counts after contravening sections of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) – disorderly conduct and possession of a prohibited knife.

The court heard that on 31 August 2024, a South African national, Irvin Molokoza, was driving Chatunga’s black Range Rover when they were stopped at the Bubi Security Roadblock in Beitbridge. The police asked Molokoza, who is Chatunga’s friend, to produce his passport and vehicle registration documents.

The NPA added that instantly, Chatunga took out his passport and handed it to the traffic police officer. The cop directed the driver to park the SUV on the side of the road. This did not go down well with former President Mugabe’s youngest child.

“It is alleged that the accused person complained after the Police Officer requested that the driver parks the motor vehicle further off the road. He allegedly disembarked from the vehicle and charged towards the Police Officer, shouting, “What are you doing? You are delaying me for the fourth time. I am rushing to a wedding in Harare, check my passport. Don’t you know who I am?” the NPA revealed.

During the melee, a small brown knife allegedly dropped from Chatunga’s black hooded-fleece jacket. The police took the weapon and arrested the boy.
