Mai Jeremaya Rape Trial: D-Day Set for Friday

Two Harare men accused of raping popular socialite Ashley Masendeke — widely known as Mai Jeremaya — will find out their fate this Friday. Harare magistrate Letwin Rwodzi is expected to deliver her verdict following the conclusion of the trial on Monday.

The two men, Thabo Dube and Martin Charlie, both pleaded not guilty to the charges. During the defence proceedings, Dube denied ever sleeping with Masendeke, saying they were just friends. Charlie, on the other hand, admitted they had sex — but insisted it was consensual and that he paid her US$20 beforehand.

Led by his lawyer, Shepherd Makonde, Charlie gave an explicit and detailed account of what he claimed happened that night. He described Masendeke as the one who initiated the act, saying she removed his t-shirt, kissed his chest, and performed oral sex on him. He alleged she asked for condoms, put one on him, and directed the entire encounter — even changing positions and encouraging him as they went along.

Charlie also claimed Masendeke was lying about not enjoying the encounter, insisting she was actively involved throughout.

This was the second time Charlie took the stand, repeating several details from earlier testimony. He maintained that everything between them happened with her full consent and after payment.

The magistrate had previously dismissed an application by the two accused to be discharged, saying they had a case to answer.

Both sides are expected to submit their final written arguments before Rwodzi makes her ruling on Friday.
