Scores Gather At Barbourfields Stadium To Honour Four Highlanders Officials Killed In Crash
Scores of mourners converged at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on Monday to pay their final respects to four Highlanders Football Club members who lost their lives in a road accident while returning from a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match last week.
The emotional joint funeral service brought together Government leaders, football officials, players, supporters, church leaders, traditional leaders and members of the public, all united in mourning the devastating loss.
The four victims were Highlanders chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba, finance executive Nkani Khoza and club supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda.
Football Rivals Stand United In Grief
The tragedy drew an extraordinary show of solidarity from across Zimbabwe’s football fraternity.
Supporters from Highlanders, Dynamos, CAPS United, Bulawayo Chiefs and several other Premier Soccer League clubs stood side by side as they honoured the lives of the four Bosso officials.
The quartet died on Thursday night after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a crash along the Bulawayo-Gweru Road in Insiza District while returning from Highlanders’ league fixture against ZPC Kariba.
Their deaths have sent shockwaves through Zimbabwean football, with messages of condolence continuing to pour in from clubs, administrators and supporters across the country and beyond.
President Grants State-Assisted Funerals
President Emmerson Mnangagwa granted the four victims State-assisted funerals in recognition of their service to Zimbabwean football and the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The honour reflected their contribution to one of the country’s most celebrated football clubs and the impact they had on the sport.
Burial Arrangements Announced
Following the memorial service, Sifiso Siziba and Nkani Khoza are scheduled to be buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery on Monday afternoon.
Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe will be laid to rest at the same cemetery on Tuesday, while Mbalenhle Sibanda will be buried at her rural home in Filabusi.
The joint funeral marked a sombre farewell for four people whose dedication to Highlanders left a lasting mark on the club, as mourners remembered their commitment and celebrated their lives.
