Kaizer Chiefs and Scottland FC paid tribute to three Highlanders FC executives before their Toyota Cup clash on Saturday.
Both teams observed a moment of silence at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
The tribute honoured Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice chairman Fiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza.
The three officials died in a devastating road accident in Zimbabwe on Thursday evening.
They were returning from Kariba after Highlanders lost 1-0 to ZPC Kariba on Wednesday.
Reports said they travelled in a Ford Raptor along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.
The accident happened near Lochard, about 50 kilometres outside Bulawayo.
The vehicle reportedly struck a cow before crashing into an oncoming bus.
The collision claimed the lives of the three Highlanders leaders.
Meanwhile, a female passenger was thrown from the vehicle after it overturned.
Another vehicle then struck her, causing her death at the scene.
Football community united in grief
The tragedy stunned Zimbabwean football and sparked widespread tributes.
The three officials had travelled to support Highlanders in a league fixture.
Their deaths came during the club’s centenary celebrations.
As a result, the milestone turned into a period of mourning.
The Zimbabwe Football Association described the loss as “immeasurable” for Highlanders and the football community.
The association praised the trio’s lasting contribution to the game.
According to ZIFA, the officials’ “unwavering commitment, selfless service and leadership made an enduring contribution to one of the country’s most iconic football institutions.”
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi also honoured the three football administrators.
“We are devastated by this heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Kenneth Mhlophe, Fiso Siziba and Nkani Khoza, as well as the entire Highlanders family,” Magwizi said.
He also reflected on the painful timing of the accident.
“It is especially painful that this loss comes during Highlanders’ centenary year, a time that should have been filled with celebration and reflection on a remarkable legacy. Instead, the football family is united in mourning.”
